I think the "more women in corporate america" question is mostly a distracting one. The real issue is "more leaders in corporate america." Man, woman, or otherwise should be offered equal opportunities to lead, but they must also be held to the same standard in those leadership positions.

Real leaders aren't afraid to take risks, but also aren't too prideful to back down when necessary.

Real leaders realize they have two ears and one mouth because we're meant to listen twice as much as we speak.

Real leaders don't care about being leaders but rather care about those they lead.

And lastly, Real leaders are not defined by their sex, but rather their investment within those that follow them.

BP doesn't have a shortage of women, it has a shortage of real leaders. BP forgot to care about those who support them, both their customers and employees. What's the saying, "every business is the customer service business." Yes... I think so.

Thanks for the article, it's an interesting angle, albeit a bit feminism weighted... but hey, we all have our biases ;) and we'd probably all be better suited to embrace them.

How about a little more statistical date for the doubtful: a new study prepared by Ontario's Richard Ivey School of Business and the Wellesley Centers for Women concludes that corporations benefit from the presence of women on the Board of Directors in Critical Mass on Corporate Boards: Why Three or More Women Enhance Governance.
Check this: and wander through the pdf links.

Of course not every woman in every organizational situation becomes an advocate for her own views when these contrast with those of the dominant view. But there are many who do. And if they cannot do it in the board room, they may leave and do it in their own. If you want to hear their voices, there's a podcast that turns up their volume. Check out Women Of Green at www.womenofgreen.com. Are you listening BP?

this is tush; really. 'Women?' more "concerned about the environment"?! Ever visit a bathroom?! seriously. the most disposing sex for sure! Always want 'new' over refurbished. You just can't tampon a 7atmosphere leak.
Working hard is the opposite of waste and men need to!, quite apart from whatever practices they would like their employers to observe.

Shayna- that's a great point.

I wish that there were enough businesses with enough women decision makers that we could have a reasonable set of comparison organizations. ... And, I wish that there were some women-run and/or feminist-value led organizations that could come to the rescue.

Nobody wants to be the B team, or the "I told you so team", but we've got to keep finding ways to put diversity and inclusion front & center.

On a related note, BP has gotten some props for being more gay-friendly (from the HRC) but not for promoting gender diversity, afaik. I want to do a little searching to see what they've done to promote girls and STEM education/careers... maybe BP is working on diversity earlier in the 'pipeline'.

thanks for commenting and tweeting... cv

It's a shame that questions like this only come up after the organization has failed... is anyone else sick of being the plan b? First the New Yorker article about Lehman Brothers, now this - when do we get the first crack at doing things right, instead of being the clean up commission (i.e. the SEC) ?
